After weeks of browsing the freezer aisle of my local supermarkets, I finally got my hands on the incredible dairy-free Vegan Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream. The ice cream Gods were definitely on my side as I stumbled across the only flavour that I had been dying to try; Peanut Butter and Cookies. Priced at a steep £4.50 a tub in my local Tesco, I was willing to spare the expense to sink my teeth into this revolutionary product.
From the excitement I felt about finding this ice cream, you would have thought I was a Ben & Jerry’s fiend before I was vegan. I had only sampled a few Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavours back when and even then I never understood the desire others had to devour a whole tub in one sitting. Partly this was due to the steep prices and avoiding the stomach cramps that always came with consuming too much dairy. I never really understood the hype. But, I will confess, I have bought into the hype now and am a full B & J convert.
Who knew peanut butter and cookies could taste so good together? The cookies are similar to the texture of Oreos, mini sandwiched biscuits with a sweet filling. Twinned with the gooey swirled peanut butter, it is heaven for your palette. The consistency is incredibly creamy for a non-dairy ice cream and in no way replicates the lumpiness of blended almonds.
Water, sugar, vegetable oils (coconut, PEANUT, sunflower), PEANUT paste and pieces (9%), glucose syrup, WHEAT flour, ALMOND paste (2%), cocoa powder, pea protein, vanilla extract, emulsifiers (sunflower lecithin, SOY lecithin), salt, raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), stabilisers (guar gum, locust bean gum), natural flavouring.
May contain other nuts. Sugar, almonds, cocoa, vanilla: traded in compliance with Fairtrade Standards.
Where to Buy In The UK
After messaging large UK supermarkets via Twitter, it is apparent that Tesco are the number one stockist of the new products. Sainsbury’s are looking to release the Ben and Jerry’s non-dairy range in early 2018 and Asda are currently in discussion with Unilever to bring it to the UK.
A Step In The Right Direction
It may not be the healthiest of ice creams, but it sure is the best indulgent type I have ever sampled. This is another step towards building a more vegan-friendly society and it is fantastic that big corporations are buying into our lifestyle. There is such a high demand for vegan products and finally companies are listening. Despite the controversy these products have caused, I will continue to support these large organisations who are making Veganism accessible. Without their buy in to our lifestyle, it will never become the norm. Thanks Ben & Jerry’s for making cruelty-free just that little bit cooler. We love ya!
Why not try their other flavours; Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey.
